About the Design
The ceiling fresco will portray the three holy mothers: St. Ann holding the Virgin Mary (left), Mary Queen of Hope holding Christ (center) and St. Elizabeth holding St. John the Baptist (right) . The setting and color scheme is inspired by the Allegheny mountains in Springtime and features local flora from the Pittsburgh area.
The design follows the traditional form of apse frescoes and mosaics found in Roman basilicas and will complement the beautiful brick and steel work of the 19th c. Romanesque Revival architecture.
After creating sketches in his studio, the artist will travel to Pittsburgh to complete the project onsite with an assistant, painting directly on the apse with mineral paints. Mineral paints are extremely archival, meaning they will last for centuries without fading. You can see an example of Andrew’s previous work in mineral paints here.
About Patronage
This project will be completed as a collaboration between the artist and four committed patron families.
There will be an opportunity for each patron to contribute $6,200 to complete this project, the total cost of which is $24,800. These tax-exempts gifts will be received by Mary’s Place and the patrons will be recognized in a design by the artist that will surround the entrance to the chapel asking for prayers for the families named.
